A complete skateboard comes built with parts chosen for you, and is the quickest way to start. Building your own lets you choose the exact deck graphic and width, the trucks you trust, and wheels that suit where you skate. It's how most skaters set up their board once they know what they like, and it's the best way to upgrade: keep the parts you love and replace the rest.
Skateboard parts guide: what you need for a complete
A complete skateboard needs a deck, grip tape, a pair of trucks, 4 wheels, 8 bearings and a set of 8 mounting bolts. Here's what to look for in each.
Skateboard deck
Most skateboard decks are 7-ply maple and around 31 to 32" long, so width is the main choice. For street skating and flip tricks, 7.75" to 8.25" is usual. For skateparks, ramps, bowls and cruising, 8.25" and up gives more room underfoot. Shoe size is only a last check: UK size 9 and under often suits 8.0", UK 10 and up often suits 8.25" or wider. Deeper concave locks your feet in for tricks; mellow concave feels flatter and more relaxed. Old school shapes are usually 8.5" and wider, with a wide nose, and suit pools and cruising.
Skateboard trucks
Your trucks should match your deck width, so the wheels sit right at the edges of the board. That's why the builder only shows trucks made for your deck. Low trucks suit technical street skating with smaller wheels, mid trucks are the all-rounder, and high trucks suit transition, bowls and cruising with bigger wheels. Popular choices include Independent, Thunder and Ace.
Skateboard wheels
Wheels are chosen by size and hardness. Hard wheels (99a to 101a) are for skateparks, smooth street and tricks. Soft wheels (78a to 87a) are for cruising, rough tarmac and getting about. In between, 88a to 95a gives a bit more grip and comfort while still rolling fast. For size, 50 to 54mm is the choice for technical street, 52 to 54mm suits most beginners, and 55mm and up rolls better over rough ground and suits transition. Skateboard bearings
Every board needs 8 bearings, 2 per wheel, and one pack does all four wheels. The ABEC number measures machining tolerance rather than skateboard speed, so a clean, well-looked-after bearing matters more than the number on the box. Bones Reds are the classic choice.
Grip tape
Grip tape goes on top of the deck so your shoes stick. It needs to be at least as wide as your deck; a standard 9" x 33" sheet covers most boards. Our Venom black grip is free with your deck in the builder, or choose a graphic grip from MOB, Jessup and more.
Bolts and riser pads
Mounting bolts (sometimes called hardware) hold the trucks to the deck, 8 bolts and nuts per board. Without risers you need 7/8" to 1 1/8" bolts; add riser pads and you need longer ones, 1 1/8" to 1 1/2". Riser pads lift the trucks to stop wheel bite, where a big wheel touches the deck in a turn and stops the board dead. They're usually needed with wheels of 56mm and over. The builder handles both for you.
Tools, helmets and pads
A skate tool does every nut and bolt on the board, and skate wax helps you slide on ledges and curbs. If you're starting out, a helmet and pads are a good idea, and you can add ours in the builder.

What width skateboard deck should I get?
Width matters more than length. For street skating and tricks, 7.75" to 8.25" is usual. For skateparks, ramps and cruising, 8.25" and up. Shoe size is only a last check: UK size 9 and under often suits 8.0", and UK 10 and up often suits 8.25" or wider. If you're not sure, the builder's "All-rounder" group (8" to 8.5") is where most people start.
Will all the parts fit together?
Yes. Once you've picked your deck, the builder only shows trucks made for its width, grip at least as wide as the deck, and bolts the right length for your setup. If you choose wheels of 56mm or bigger, it adds a step for riser pads so the wheels don't rub the deck on turns.
Can you build my skateboard for me?
Yes. Choose "Have one of us build it for you" on the last step and, for £4.99, we fit the grip, trucks, wheels, bearings and bolts and send it ready to ride. We can build it when all the parts come from us.
Is the grip tape really free?
Yes. Our Venom black grip tape (9" x 33") is free with any deck up to 9" wide that you buy in the builder. Prefer a different grip? MOB, Jessup and plenty more are there to choose from.
What do I need to build a complete skateboard?
A deck, grip tape, a pair of trucks, 4 wheels, 8 bearings and a set of 8 mounting bolts. The builder takes you through each one in order, and you can skip any part you already have.
Do I need tools to put it together?
A skate tool does every nut and bolt on a board. You'll find the Venom T-Tool in the Extras step, or choose our build service and we'll put it together for you.
Is it cheaper to build your own skateboard?
It depends on the parts you choose. A ready-made complete is often the cheapest way to start, while building your own lets you choose every part and spend where it matters to you. The builder shows your running total as you go, so you can see exactly what your board costs.
Can I save my board and come back to it?
Yes. Your board is saved on your device as you build, so you can carry on where you left off. You can also share a link to your board, which opens it exactly as you built it.
